Planning to get away from it all to get it all planned?

I have been fortunate enough to have travelled the world with some of my clients to facilitate annual partner retreats and strategic planning sessions for them or to speak at annual conferences and deliver key-note speeches. From Australia to Bangladesh, from Whistler to Charleston, and from Blue Mountain to Edmonton, each venue has its own unique style and recreation facilities.

Of course, all work and no play makes Jack (or Jackie) a dull boy (or girl). So if there is the chance to ski, play beach volley-ball, visit a casino, or a historical site of interest, some firms jump at the chance to grab some 'R 'n' R'. Naturally, I'm happy to join in!

Seriously, though, these opportunities often help to build team spirit and I have often helped in facilitating team-building sessions as a part of a retreat or strategic planning session.

During your retreat there are often several serious issues to cover. Popular items for discussion often include:

  • 'Where are we, as a firm, right now?'
  • 'Where do we want to be?'
  • 'How can we get there?'
  • 'Do we have the right people onboard to achieve what we want to achieve?'
  • 'Are we dealing with the right type of clients?'
  • 'What does our ideal client look like?'
  • 'How do we generate new lines of work?'
  • 'How do we move our clients from compliance to reliance?'
  • 'What is the best way to share profits among the Partners?'
  • 'What can we do to build a succession plan for the Partners?'

The above questions are just a few of the more 'typical' issues many firms face.
